Over Mint Mark
(abbreviated - OMM)

Over Mint Marks occur in much the same manner as repunched mint marks, but the difference is that one branch mint letter is placed over a different one. In the case of Lincoln cents, only two possibilities exist, either a "D" over an "S" or an "S" over a "D". It is not known for sure, but is theorized that OMMs occur in cases where too many dies are prepared for one branch mint, are either returned to or held by the Philadelphia mint, then re-prepared for the other branch mint. During this re-preparation the unnecessary mint mark is filled or sanded flat, and the new mint mark is added. The OMM occurs when the old mint mark is not completely removed.
